Travelling to Hungary from Australia? Australian citizens can normally visit without a visa for up to 90 days, but passport and Schengen entry rules still apply.
Here's what to check before your trip.
Hungary Entry Requirements for Australian Citizens: At a Glance
• Visa: Not required for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
• Passport: Must have been issued less than 10 years before entry and remain valid for at least three months after leaving the Schengen Area.
• Length of stay: Visits to other Schengen countries count towards the same 90-day limit.
• EES: Most Australian short-stay visitors must register their passport and biometric details at the Schengen border.
• ETIAS: Not yet operational. Check the official EU website before travelling.
• Currency: Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro.
Do Australians Need a Visa for Hungary?
No. Australian passport holders can normally visit Hungary without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
This covers holidays, family visits and business meetings. Working, studying or living in Hungary may require a visa or residence permit.
Official information: Smartraveller – Hungary.
What Passport Do Australians Need to Visit Hungary?
You need a valid Australian passport that:
• Was issued less than 10 years before your arrival in the Schengen Area.
• Remains valid for at least three months after your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
For example, if you're leaving on 20 August, your passport must remain valid until at least 20 November.
Check both the issue and expiry dates. If you hold an emergency passport, confirm the requirements before travelling.
How Long Can Australians Stay in Hungary?
Australian citizens can normally spend up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period in the Schengen Area.
The 90-day limit applies to all Schengen countries combined.
If you've already spent 30 days in Italy and 20 in France, you'd normally have 40 days remaining.
Arrival and departure days both count, and briefly leaving the Schengen Area doesn't reset the allowance.
Use the European Commission's short-stay calculator to check your remaining days.
Can Australians Stay in Hungary for More Than 90 Days?
Longer stays generally require an appropriate Hungarian visa or residence permit.
Hungary has bilateral arrangements allowing certain nationalities additional time, but Australia is not on the Hungarian immigration authority's published list of countries eligible for these extensions.
Don't assume an agreement with another European country allows you to stay longer in Hungary.
For extended visits, consult the Hungarian immigration authority.
What Happens When You Arrive in Hungary?
If Budapest is your first entry point into the Schengen Area, you'll go through passport control there.
Border officers may ask about your accommodation, travel plans and intended stay. Keep your booking details and return or onward travel information available.
If you connect through another Schengen country, you'll normally complete passport control at that first airport.
What Is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)?
EES records the entry and exit of most non-EU visitors travelling to participating European countries for short stays.
Australian tourists generally have their passport details, facial image and fingerprints registered at the Schengen border. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection, and some other travellers are exempt from EES.
Registration is free and doesn't require an application before departure.
If you enter through another Schengen country before reaching Hungary, EES registration normally takes place there.
Official information: EU Entry/Exit System.
Will Australians Need ETIAS for Hungary?
ETIAS is a travel authorisation system for visa-exempt visitors, including Australian citizens.
Unlike EES, which records border crossings, ETIAS requires eligible travellers to obtain authorisation before departure once the system becomes operational.
An approved authorisation will generally remain valid for three years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. It won't extend the 90-day Schengen allowance.
ETIAS is not yet operational. Check the official ETIAS website for its launch date, application requirements and fees.
Travelling to Hungary with Children
Every child, including babies, needs their own valid Australian passport.
If a child travels with only one parent or another adult, parental consent or supporting documents may be required. Australian family law may also impose conditions depending on parental responsibility and custody arrangements.
Check the airline's requirements and the Australian Government's advice on travelling with children.
Practical Information for Australian Visitors to Hungary
• Travel insurance: Australian Medicare generally doesn't cover treatment in Hungary. Arrange insurance covering medical emergencies, hospital treatment and repatriation.
• Money: Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF). Cards are widely accepted, but some cash is useful. Check your bank's overseas fees.
• Mobile phones: Check roaming charges with your Australian provider. A European travel eSIM may be a cheaper alternative.
• Power plugs: Hungary uses Type C and F sockets, with a 230 V, 50 Hz supply. Australian travellers need an adaptor. Check that your devices support the voltage.
• Driving: Australians can drive in Hungary on a valid Australian licence for up to one year, provided they also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Hungarian translation. Check the requirements before hiring a car.
• Road rules: Hungary drives on the right and has a zero blood alcohol limit. Headlights are compulsory outside built-up areas, even during daylight.
• Motorways: Many motorways require an electronic vignette. Check whether your hire car already has one.
• Emergencies: Dial 112. For Australian consular assistance, see Smartraveller.
