Planning a trip to Hungary from Cyprus? Whether you're flying from Larnaca or Paphos, here's what you need to know about passports, visas and entry requirements before you travel.

As citizens of the European Union, Cypriots can visit Hungary without a visa. There are, however, a few differences worth knowing before you travel.

Hungary Entry Requirements for Cypriot Citizens: At a Glance

Visa: Not required.

  • Travel documents: Valid Cypriot passport or national identity card.
  • Document validity: Your passport or ID card must be valid when you travel.
  • Length of stay: Up to three months without residence registration. Longer stays are possible under EU rules.
  • Border control: Required when flying directly from Cyprus to Hungary.
  • EES and ETIAS: Neither applies to Cypriot citizens.
  • Currency: Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro.

Do Cypriot Citizens Need a Visa for Hungary?

No. Cypriot citizens can visit Hungary without a visa for holidays, family visits and business trips.

The Schengen tourist limit of 90 days in any 180-day period doesn't apply to EU citizens.

You can check the rules on the official Your Europe website.

Is Cyprus in the Schengen Area?

Cyprus is an EU member and participates in Schengen cooperation, but border checks between Cyprus and the Schengen Area have not yet been abolished. Hungary is a full Schengen member.

Passengers flying directly from Larnaca or Paphos to Budapest must therefore pass through border control on arrival.

If you change planes in another Schengen country, such as Austria or Germany, you'll normally pass through border control when you first enter the Schengen Area.

Can Cypriot Citizens Travel to Hungary with an ID Card?

Yes. You can use a valid Cypriot national identity card instead of a passport. There's no need to carry both.

A driving licence or residence permit isn't a substitute for a passport or national identity card.

Check your document's expiry date and your airline's identification requirements before departure.

How Long Can Cypriot Citizens Stay in Hungary?

You can stay in Hungary for up to three months without registering your residence.

For longer stays, EU residence conditions apply. These may include employment, study, sufficient financial resources and healthcare cover.

If you intend to stay for more than three months, you must register your residence with the Hungarian authorities by the 93rd day after arrival.

Full details are available from the Hungarian immigration authority.

Do EES and ETIAS Apply to Cypriot Citizens?

No. Neither EES nor ETIAS applies to Cypriot citizens. Both systems concern certain non-EU travellers.

Official information: EES and ETIAS.

Travelling to Hungary with Children

Every Cypriot child, including babies, needs their own valid passport or national identity card.

If a child is travelling with only one parent, another adult or alone, additional documents or parental consent may be required, depending on the countries involved.

Check your airline's requirements and the rules of any countries you'll pass through.

Practical Travel Information

  • Healthcare: Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you're eligible. It covers medically necessary state healthcare under the applicable conditions, but not private treatment or medical repatriation. Travel insurance is recommended.
  • Money: Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro. Cards are widely accepted, although some cash is useful for smaller purchases.
  • Mobile phones: EU roaming rules generally apply to eligible EU mobile plans, subject to fair-use limits.
  • Driving: Hungary drives on the right, unlike Cyprus. Valid, full EU driving licences are recognised. Many motorways require an electronic vignette, and Hungary has a zero blood alcohol limit for drivers.
  • Electricity: Cyprus uses Type G plugs, while Hungary uses Type C and F plugs. You'll usually need an adaptor. Both countries use 230V electricity.
  • Emergencies: Call 112 for emergency assistance.
