Planning a trip to Hungary from the United States? American citizens can visit without a visa for a short holiday, but it's worth checking a few things before you leave.
Your passport needs to meet the Schengen entry rules, and any time you've recently spent in other Schengen countries could affect how long you can stay.
Hungary Entry Requirements for US Citizens: At a Glance
• Visa: US citizens can normally visit Hungary without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
• Passport: Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before entry and remain valid for at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen Area.
• Length of stay: Days spent in other Schengen countries count towards the same 90-day limit.
• EES: Most American tourists have their passport details and biometric information recorded when entering or leaving the Schengen Area.
• ETIAS: Check the official EU website to see whether travel authorisation is required for your trip.
• Currency: Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro.
Do Americans Need a Visa for Hungary?
For most holidays, no. If you hold a valid US passport, you can normally visit Hungary without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
The same arrangement covers visits to friends and family, business meetings and certain other short stays.
Planning to work, study or spend longer in Hungary? Different visa or residence rules may apply.
You can check the details on the US Department of State's Hungary travel information page.
What Passport Do You Need to Visit Hungary?
You'll need a valid US passport book. A US passport card isn't accepted for international air travel to Europe.
For entry into the Schengen Area, your passport must meet two requirements:
• It must have been issued less than 10 years before your arrival.
• It must be valid for at least three months after your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
Both dates matter.
For example, if you're leaving the Schengen Area on 15 June, your passport must be valid until at least 15 September.
Adult US passports are normally valid for 10 years, while passports issued to children under 16 are valid for five years.
Check your passport before booking flights, particularly if it's due to expire within the next few months.
How Long Can Americans Stay in Hungary?
The usual visa-free allowance is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period.
Those 90 days cover the whole Schengen Area, not just Hungary.
Say you've spent 20 days in France and 30 days in Italy within the relevant period. That would normally leave you with 40 days for Hungary and any other Schengen countries.
Your arrival and departure days both count. Leaving the Schengen Area for a few days doesn't automatically give you a fresh 90-day allowance.
If you're visiting several European countries, the European Commission's short-stay calculator can help you work out how many days you have left.
Can Americans Stay in Hungary for More Than 90 Days?
Hungary and the United States also have a bilateral agreement that may allow certain American visitors to stay longer.
Under this agreement, eligible US citizens may stay in Hungary for up to 90 additional days beyond the usual Schengen visa-free allowance.
There are important restrictions. The extra stay applies only to Hungary, not to the rest of the Schengen Area. During this period, you cannot travel to other Schengen countries under the agreement.
You must also leave the Schengen Area directly from Hungary. Even a connecting flight through another Schengen country could cause problems if your normal visa-free allowance has expired.
The agreement cannot be used for employment or studies requiring a residence permit.
This isn't an automatic extension, and specific conditions apply. Before planning a longer visit, read the Hungarian immigration authority's official guidance carefully.
What Happens When You Arrive in Hungary?
If you fly directly to Budapest from outside the Schengen Area, you'll go through passport control at Budapest Airport.
You may be asked why you're visiting, how long you're staying and where you'll be staying. It's sensible to have your accommodation details and return or onward travel arrangements available.
If your flight from the USA connects in another Schengen country, such as Germany or the Netherlands, you'll normally go through Schengen passport control there instead.
Once you're inside the Schengen Area, flights between member countries generally don't involve routine passport checks, although temporary border controls are possible.
What Is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)?
The Entry/Exit System, usually called EES, records when travellers from outside the EU enter and leave participating European countries for short stays.
For most American tourists, this means having passport details and biometric information registered at the border.
On your first entry under the system, you'll normally have a facial image taken and your fingerprints collected. Children under 12 don't have their fingerprints collected, and certain travellers, including qualifying residence permit holders, are exempt from EES.
There's no application to complete beforehand, and registration is free.
If you fly to Budapest via another Schengen airport, the procedure will normally take place at that first airport.
Border checks can take longer during busy periods, so allow some extra time when planning your journey.
Further information is available on the official EU EES website.
Will Americans Need ETIAS for Hungary?
ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, designed for travellers who can visit participating European countries without a visa. This includes most American tourists.
Unlike EES, which records border crossings, ETIAS concerns travel authorisation obtained before departure.
If ETIAS is required for your trip, you'll need an approved authorisation before travelling. It isn't a visa, and you'll still need your passport.
An approved ETIAS authorisation is generally valid for up to three years, or until the passport linked to it expires. It doesn't give you extra days in the Schengen Area.
For the current rules, application process and fees, visit the official EU ETIAS website.
Travelling to Hungary with Children
Children of all ages, including babies, need their own US passport book.
If you're travelling with your child but the other parent isn't coming, check what evidence of parental consent you need. The US Department of State's Hungary guidance calls for a consent letter from the absent parent, with contact details and information about the trip, or suitable evidence of sole custody or another applicable legal arrangement.
If a child is travelling with grandparents, relatives or another adult, additional written permission may be needed.
It's also worth carrying a copy of the child's birth certificate, particularly if you have different surnames.
You can check the US Department of State's Hungary travel information and your airline's requirements before departure.
A Few Practical Things to Know Before You Go
Travel insurance: Your US health insurance may offer limited cover overseas, and Medicare generally doesn't cover medical treatment outside the United States. Consider travel medical insurance for your holiday.
Money: Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF). You can pay by Visa or Mastercard in most hotels, restaurants and shops, particularly in Budapest. American Express isn't as widely accepted, and a little cash can still come in handy.
Mobile phones: Check your provider's international roaming rates before leaving the USA. A travel eSIM may be a cheaper option if your phone supports one.
Driving: If you're visiting Hungary for a short stay, you can drive with a valid US driver's licence, but you'll also need an official translation of your licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Check the car hire company's requirements before collecting your vehicle.
Emergencies: Dial 112 for emergency services in Hungary. The US Embassy in Budapest can also assist American citizens in certain situations, including lost or stolen passports.
