Planning a trip to Hungary from North Cyprus? Here's what you need to know about passports, visas, Schengen rules and entry requirements before you travel.
The rules depend on your citizenship and travel documents. Some Turkish Cypriots hold both Republic of Cyprus and Turkish citizenship. Those travelling with valid Republic of Cyprus documents can exercise their EU citizenship rights, while Turkish citizens travelling on Turkish documents must meet the requirements applicable to their passport.
Hungary Entry Requirements for Travellers from North Cyprus: At a Glance
• Visa: Not required for Turkish Cypriots with Republic of Cyprus citizenship. Generally required for Turkish citizens with ordinary passports.
• Travel documents: Republic of Cyprus citizens can travel with a valid Cypriot passport or national identity card. Turkish citizens travelling on Turkish documents need a valid passport.
• Passport validity: Turkish citizens visiting Hungary for a short stay generally need a passport issued within the previous 10 years and valid for at least three months after leaving the Schengen Area.
• Length of stay: Republic of Cyprus citizens can stay for up to three months without residence registration. Turkish short-stay visitors are generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period.
• EES and ETIAS: EES generally applies to Turkish short-stay visitors, with exemptions. ETIAS is not yet operational.
• Currency: Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro.
Do Turkish Cypriots and Turkish Citizens Need a Visa for Hungary?
Turkish Cypriots with Republic of Cyprus citizenship: You can visit Hungary without a visa for holidays, family visits and business trips. As an EU citizen, you can travel with a valid Cypriot passport or national identity card.
Turkish citizens: If you hold an ordinary Turkish passport, you generally need a Schengen visa to visit Hungary. Certain diplomatic, service and special passport holders are exempt from short-stay visa requirements.
If you hold both citizenships, travelling with your Republic of Cyprus passport or national identity card allows you to exercise your EU free movement rights.
Living in North Cyprus or holding a local residence permit does not automatically give Turkish citizens visa-free entry to Hungary.

Is North Cyprus in the Schengen Area?
No. Hungary is part of the Schengen Area, but Cyprus has not yet joined the area without internal border controls.
This means that a Cypriot visa or residence permit does not, by itself, allow Turkish citizens to enter Hungary without meeting the applicable Schengen requirements.
Turkish Cypriots with Republic of Cyprus citizenship, however, retain their EU free movement rights and can travel to Hungary as EU citizens.
Official information: European Commission – Visa Policy.
Can Turkish Cypriots and Turkish Citizens Travel to Hungary with an ID Card?
Turkish Cypriots with Republic of Cyprus citizenship: You can travel to Hungary using a valid Cypriot national identity card instead of a passport. There's no need to carry both.
Turkish citizens: A Turkish national identity card alone is not sufficient for entry into Hungary. You need a valid Turkish passport and, where required, a Schengen visa.
If you have both Republic of Cyprus and Turkish citizenship, you can use your valid Cypriot passport or national identity card to travel to Hungary under EU free movement rules.

How Long Can Turkish Cypriots and Turkish Citizens Stay in Hungary?
Turkish Cypriots with Republic of Cyprus citizenship: You can stay in Hungary for up to three months without registering your residence.
For longer stays, EU residence conditions apply. If you intend to stay for more than three months, you must register with the Hungarian authorities by the 93rd day after arrival.
Turkish citizens: Short visits are generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. Your visa may allow a shorter stay.
Official information: Hungarian Immigration Authority.
Do EES and ETIAS Apply?
Turkish Cypriots with Republic of Cyprus citizenship: Neither EES nor ETIAS applies when travelling as EU citizens with valid Republic of Cyprus documents.
Turkish citizens: EES generally applies to short-stay visitors, including Schengen visa holders, unless an exemption applies.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. It records the entry and exit of most non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen Area for short stays, although some travellers are exempt.
Hungary uses EES, but Cyprus does not. For Turkish citizens subject to EES, registration normally takes place at their first point of entry into the Schengen Area.
ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications.
Official information: EES and ETIAS.
Travelling to Hungary with Children
Every child, including babies, needs their own valid travel document.
Children with Republic of Cyprus citizenship: A valid Cypriot passport or national identity card is sufficient for travel to Hungary.
Children with Turkish citizenship: A valid Turkish passport is required, together with a Schengen visa where applicable.
If a child is travelling with only one parent, another adult or alone, additional documents or parental consent may be required.
Check the requirements of the countries involved in your journey and any applicable rules for children travelling without both parents.

Practical Travel Information
• Healthcare: Turkish Cypriots who are eligible for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) should bring it with them. It covers medically necessary state healthcare under the applicable conditions, but not private treatment or medical repatriation. Turkish citizens should arrange appropriate medical cover. A North Cyprus residence permit or local health insurance does not automatically provide EHIC cover. Travel insurance is recommended for everyone.
• Money: Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro. Cards are widely accepted, although some cash is useful.
• Mobile phones: EU roaming rules apply to eligible EU mobile contracts, but not automatically to North Cyprus or Turkish mobile plans. Check your provider's charges.
• Driving: Hungary drives on the right, unlike North Cyprus. Valid Republic of Cyprus driving licences are recognised. Turkish licence holders should check the Hungarian recognition requirements before driving. Many motorways require an electronic vignette, and Hungary has a zero blood alcohol limit for drivers.
• Electricity: North Cyprus generally uses Type G plugs, while Hungary uses Type C and F plugs. You'll usually need an adaptor. Both use 230V electricity.
• Emergencies: Call 112 for emergency assistance.
