Gödöllő Royal Palace is one of Hungary's largest Baroque palaces. Built in the 18th century for Count Antal Grassalkovich, it became a royal residence more than a hundred years later.
In 1867, Franz Joseph and Elisabeth were crowned King and Queen of Hungary. To mark the occasion, the Hungarian state gave them the use of Gödöllő Palace and its park as a coronation gift.
Sisi soon became very fond of Gödöllő. Life here was less formal than at the imperial court in Vienna, and she could spend more time doing what she loved, particularly horse riding.
During your visit, you'll see the restored royal apartments of Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph, along with the palace's grand ceremonial hall.
The rooms contain period furniture and portraits of the royal family, giving you an idea of what the palace was like when Sisi lived here.
Sisi's relationship with Hungary went well beyond her visits to the palace. She learnt Hungarian, had Hungarian ladies-in-waiting and supported closer relations between Hungary and the Habsburg court. She supported Count Gyula Andrássy, who became Hungary's prime minister in 1867.
Sisi was very popular in Hungary, and many Hungarians still remember her fondly today.
After visiting the palace, we'll take a walk through the gardens, with time for photographs.
Before returning to Budapest, we'll stop for a coffee and perhaps a slice of cake.
The prices include entrance tickets to Gödöllő Royal Palace, but do not include food or drinks purchased at restaurants or cafés during the tour.
Your driver-host will take you back to your accommodation in Budapest. The whole trip takes approximately four to five hours.
