In 1323, King Charles Robert made Visegrád his royal seat. The town later flourished under King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century.
Two of Visegrád's most important historical sites survive today. The Citadel was built as a fortress to protect the area, while the Royal Palace below served as a residence for Hungarian kings and their court.
Our first stop is Visegrád Citadel, a 13th-century fortress standing high above the River Danube.
Unlike the Royal Palace, the Citadel was built primarily for defence. Its thick stone walls and towers protected an important strategic position overlooking the river.
From the castle walls, you'll see the Danube winding between the wooded hills of the Danube Bend.
The fortress was built after the Mongol invasion of Hungary and later became an important royal stronghold. The Hungarian Holy Crown was kept here at various times during the Middle Ages. Inside, you can see exhibitions about medieval life, weapons and the castle's history. There's time to look around and take photographs before we continue to lunch.
After visiting the castle, we'll sit down for a traditional Hungarian goulash lunch at a local restaurant.
Goulash is one of Hungary's best-known dishes. Although many people outside Hungary think of it as a thick meat stew, traditional Hungarian goulash, or gulyásleves, is usually served as a hearty soup made with meat, vegetables and paprika.
The dish has its roots in the cooking traditions of Hungarian herdsmen, who prepared meals in large pots over an open fire. The word gulyás originally referred to a cattle herdsman. One serving of traditional Hungarian goulash is included in the tour price. Vegetarian and vegan alternatives are also available at no extra cost. Drinks and additional orders are paid for separately.
After lunch, we'll visit Visegrád Royal Palace, situated below the Citadel in the town.
While the fortress above was built for defence, the Royal Palace was a place where kings lived, received guests and held court. The palace developed during the 14th century and was later transformed into an impressive Renaissance residence under King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century. Today, you can walk through reconstructed courtyards, see the Renaissance Hercules Fountain and learn about everyday life at the Hungarian royal court. The exhibitions include archaeological finds from the palace and show how the royal household lived.
After visiting the Royal Palace, we'll drive back to Budapest. Your driver-guide will take you to your accommodation.
